SPECTACULAR! Sandhurst Band celebrated their centenary year in style on 5th July at The Hexagon Theatre in reading.
The audience were treated to a feast of brass, drum and voice with an array of special guests performing with the band in a show that will be remembered by players for many years to come. The Corps of Drums of HM Royal Marines provided a glittering display of drums beatings which went down a storm with the audience. A quality performance was provided by the wonderful Reading Phoenix Choir under their Musical Director Norman Morris. They sang both a capella and also in some marvellous joint performances with the band - most notably Hymn to the Fallen and Handel's Messiah. Favourite moment for the band though was playing with Euphonium master David Childs. David just blew everyone away with a mesmerising performance in both halfs. he was also on hand to present a special award to our Life President Brian Attewell, in recognition of 60 years service with the band. David presented Brian with a framed score of the march "Celebration", which was written by Sandhurst MD, Ian McEliigott especially for the Centenary. Ian has kindly dedicated the march to Brian.
The band themselves put in a first class performance, despite a demanding rehearsal schedule that kept them blowing most of the day. The evening was compered by BBC radio 3's Ian Skelly who managed to keep everything moving along perfectly and also gave a great commentary during the "Battle of Trafalgar" finale. Overall the band were delighted with outcome of the concert, the biggest they have ever attempted and it is little wonder that the players all headed to a local Indian restaurant immediately after the concert for a little recuperation. Our thanks go to all the guests for helping us to mark our celebrations in such a wonderful and for all our supporters who came to see it.
